A different take on the off season

So, we at CheMETSry were thinking last night about the possible off season acquisitions. We debated much and believe to have come up with an idea that might work. Here we go:

1. Sign Matt Holliday for left field.

2. Make a serious run at Roy Halladay. If nothing comes from it, sign Joel Pineiro and Randy Wolf to make a Santana/Wolf/Pineiro/Maine/Pelfrey rotation. I'd move Perez to the bullpen as either a reliever or a long reliever. If he starts showing signs of consistency, then throw him back in the rotation.

3. Sign Carlos Delgado for a year. He'll give you the power and be nice alongside Wright, Beltran, and Holliday. Bringing Delgado back would be a cheap bridge to Ike Davis for 2011. Bringing back Delgado for a year then having Davis for 2011 would save a huge amount of money that could go to this off season.

4. Trade Castillo and bring in Orlando Hudson. I believe this transaction is way overdue and would be a super upgrade at second base.

5. With the money being saved on a cheap and temporary first base option, sign Bengie Molina as catcher.

This is what the 2010 Mets would look like:

C. Bengie Molina
1B. Carlos Delgado
2B. Orlando Hudson
SS. Jose Reyes
3B. David Wright
LF. Matt Holliday
CF. Carlos Beltran
RF. Jeff Francoeur

(All ERA's for the 09 season)

1. Johan Santana, 3.13 ERA
2. Randy Wolf, 3.23 ERA
3. Joel Pineiro, 3.49 ERA
4. John Maine, 4.43 ERA
5. Mike Pelfrey, 5.03 ERA

What do you guys think? I think that the line-up has great depth, and the rotation is pretty strong. This looks like a winning team.

  1. Guys, I like the thinking here...that would be a hell of a lineup... quick question, Holliday's agent Scott Boras want a Texeira type contract 8 years $180 million...that sounds like a lot for Holliday...would you guys give him the money?

  2. Yeah, Joe, I would. The Mets really need to step up and show everyone that they're still a threat. The Mets had an awful 09 season and need to go big this off season to get fans to watch and give them a reason to buy tickets for 2010. The Mets need to start thinking about rebuilding the team (major and minor league) in many ways.

I'd give Holliday his money. Not at first, but I'd definitely make sure we were his best option. The Mets need to spice up their organization and I believe getting the power they desperately need from the outfield SHOULD come from Matt Holliday, a known power hitter.

  3. I disagree with you on Delgado completely. He needs to go to an American league team, where he can DH.
I like Murphy, and he can be a bridge to Davis. Another note, If Murphy plays well in 2010, in the field and at the plate, I say move Davis to Right or Left, where he has played in the minors and the Baseball World Cup.
A Mets-Jays trade involving Halladay is very unlikely, because the Mets can not blow up their farm system to succeed.

  4. I'm just saying that we'd get some power with signing him for a one year deal while waiting for Ike Davis to develop a little more. Doing this will give us more money to spend on power and pitching.

  5. Murphy hit 38 doubles and 12 homeruns, 7 HRs at Citi, I would call that extra bases power, kinda like Luis Gonzalez before 1999 and after 2002. You get what I mean?

  6. I know what you mean but I don't think he's our 2010 solution for first base. All I'm saying is that Delgado could be a mentor to Davis kind of like Schneider was doing to Josh Thole this year.

  7. that's what happened for a lot of this season because Delgado was out, and in the dugout, for example, the book. But, also catcher is a very different position than first, I don't really think that he needs a mentor for first base. Catcher is the most demanding position in baseball, so many facets that a prospect needs some schooling. not the case at first base.

  8. Do you think the Mets would have any intrest in Crawford rather than Holliday? Also, on 660 WFAN radio they were talking about getting Xavier Nady and bringing him back what are you thoughts in that?

  9. I like Nady a lot, even though he was injured for most of the season, he will be fine for next year, and I think he is the right handed bat that we need. BUT I think I would go after Bay or Holliday first then he's your fall back.

I think that the only way the Mets could have gotten Crawford was to pick up J.J. Putz's option and traded them for each (I would give maybe a low level prospect along with Putz), considering that they need a closer. But since that's not gonna happen, I don't think that Mets get Crawford. But it would be great if they could.

  10. I'd love to see Crawford in left only if we can get good power at first

  11. Murphy does have power! I don't think people get that. Power doesn't necessarily mean HRs it means extra base hits, and Murph will get a ton of 'em next year, given the chance.

  12. I actually wouldn't mind the signing of Nady. I always liked him, plus he has played 82 games at first base and could complement as a right handed bat to Murphy if ever needed to. Nady's a gamer, but I would still love to have Crawford above all, and I wouldn't mind trading prospects to do so (Johan Santana trade?). I actually wouldn't mind bringing Delgy back if we had to

  13. I understand Murphy has power but I think we should research other power sources. Murphy did real well at first defensively and showed pretty good signs of power offensively. Sure, maybe Murphy will turn into a great first baseman someday but I'm thinking now. Murphy will get a lot of playing time at first from now on so maybe you're right. Maybe Murphy can hold down the power/first base void thats missing. I just wouldn't call it a sure thing, like how they put Pelfrey as our #2.

  14. True, I want to give murphy the benifit of the doubt, because he preformed well for the last half of the season, and looked more comfortable. I would be hapy to X on the Mets as a left fielder/ sub-first baseman, plus it gives you another bat.
The Mets must and most likely will sign a #2 starter this off-season. That will hopefully be Lackey, but I don't think that Wolf is a #2, he's a #3,#4. I like my Harden, and Sheets with a lot of incentives.
